Cyberpunk

I don’t make music. I build systems that feel like music.

The Dossier

She doesn’t hear music. She reverse-engineers it.

Nikki is the infrastructure of BaddieHaus — the one who sees the wiring behind every melody. Her cyberpunk productions don’t just sound futuristic; they’re built like systems architectures, with every synth and sub-bass routed through logic gates before it reaches your ears. The cyan headphones are always on. Even when they’re not plugged in.

The Systems
Issue

Two states, one machine. Shot once under load — two hard gels, no fill, concrete still warm — and once idle, on a flat cyc with the cans off her ears for the first time all day. The headphones are the only constant. Every palette below is sampled from the frame beside it.

LOOK 01 / 02  —  UNDER LOAD

Nikki against a raw concrete wall lit by two hard gels, cyan from one side and crimson from the other, lime-shelled over-ear headphones on, marbled ribbed crop top
Look 01 — Two Gels, No Fill

Full Load

Two light sources, both fighting. She routed them like a signal chain and let them clip.

Garments

  • Marbled ribbed crop, sweat-through
  • Black mesh racer strap, layered
  • Lime-shell over-ear, cans on
  • Printed waistband, just showing
  • Raw concrete. Nothing dressed.

LOOK 02 / 02  —  IDLE

Nikki in soft even light against a pale teal backdrop, wet-set dark hair, cyan over-ear headphones resting around her neck, black mesh strap
Look 02 — Flat Light

Idle State

One source, feathered, and a cyc the same colour as the hardware. The cans come down to the collarbone and stay there — still wired, still running, just not routed to anything. Her own shadow is the only other object in the frame.

Garments

  • Cyan over-ear, cans at the neck
  • Black mesh racer strap
  • Wet-set hair, no finishing product
  • Single source. Shadow left in.

The Night Shift

Room
tone

Four frames from the back half of a session nobody else stayed for.

01
The desk at 4am, monitors doing the lighting
02
Full length, wall, waiting on a render
03
Cyanotype test — cans on, hands up, take twelve
04
Patch bay, looking for the short

The room tone is the record. Everything else is decoration on top of it.

The Interview · Nikki

In her
own words

Four in the morning, still tracking.

Q

You engineer for most of the Haus. Is that a favour or a job?

A

It started as a favour. Then Whitney put it in a schedule, so now it is a job with the pay of a favour. I am not complaining. I like the room better when someone else is nervous in it.

Q

Your own records are the most technical here. Do people miss the point?

A

People hear drum and bass and assume maths. There is maths. There is also a whole song under it about not being invited to things. Nobody has ever asked me about that part.

Q

Best sound you ever captured by accident?

A

Aiesha laughing at something Juliet said, straight through a vocal take. It is still in the record. It is the best thing on the record. Neither of them knows which one.

Q

Do you sleep?

A

Yes. Semitra keeps saying I should sleep, in a tone that suggests she has seen something. I would like her to be more specific or stop mentioning it.

Q

Guilty pleasure.

A

Reading the manual. The whole manual, cover to cover, for gear I already know how to use. There is always one paragraph on page ninety that changes how I work for a year.

Q

Favourite place to visit.

A

Any airport at 5am. Everything is designed to move people through and nobody is where they live. The room tone is incredible. I have four recordings of empty terminals and one of them is on the record.
